My Librarian: Katie

Some of my earliest memories are of my mother reading to me in a Cincinnati-area laundromat. It was a wonderful way to pass the time, and long before we moved to a house with a washer and dryer, I was reading independently. I still remember the thrill of reading Cat in the Hat by myself for the first time! I've been delighted to discover or rediscover some old picture book favorites with my son, from Sandra Boynton to Eric Carle. I have a particular interest in neurodiversity and disabilities with a background in working for various disability-focused nonprofits and government agencies, as well as being the parent of a neurodiverse child. Curating GPL’s Sensory Kit collection, as well as board books and activities for Exploration Stations (our early literacy and sensory space), has been the perfect combination of my passions from all aspects of my professional and personal life!

My Top Picks

Here are a few of my all-time favorites for both kids and adults, from childhood to now!

Neorodiversity

From nonfiction books to memoirs and children's books, these are some of the books that have deepened my understanding of autism, anxiety, and ADHD.

Tactile Books

Along with introducing the youngest readers to books and early learning concepts, tactile board books also offer an opportunity for sensory exploration and regulation to readers of all ages.

Sensory Kits

Sensory tools can get expensive, and each child responds to them differently. Our Sensory Kit collection offers patrons an opportunity to try things out before buying, access otherwise unaffordable items, or use something on a short term basis.
